Originally released in 1949, Storm Below tells the tale of a fictional Royal Canadian army send and its staff. the journey unfolds over six days of an escort run around the Atlantic Ocean to Newfoundland throughout the moment global conflict. The send, the HMCS Riverford, is a composite of the vessels, quite often corvettes, that writer Hugh Garner served on in the course of his time within the Canadian military, and the Canadian sailors whose reports he relates are masterfully drawn from the crewmen he knew in the course of his months at sea.
In his preface to Storm Below, his first novel, Garner says: "It takes all types to make an international, and it additionally takes all types to make a conflict – or struggle one after many of the others make it…. They [his characters] will not be even ’typical’ sailors, if such exist.
